Natural Remedies Series

Is there a time and a place for natural remedies?
Herbal or natural remedies use to be viewed as hoodoo or voodoo. However in recent years more and more people have begun to turn to alternative treatments to help treat and prevent ailments. With rising costs of prescriptions, and the known side effects that medications cause, or even just how our bodies react more people are looking for another way.
Herbal remedies have been used for many years. In fact their is written documentation going back more than 5,000 years about herbal medicine being the only form of medicine available to treat ailments.
Our Journey With Alternative or Natural Remedies
It stemmed from my desire to get rid of side effects from medication. My body has always seemed to be more sensitive to pharmaceuticals. When you read a label that said may cause these side effects, I usually would have some of them. It was rare that I didn’t. Thankfully most were not unbearable but more of an inconvenience or discomfort. That is accept for my antidepressant. After being on them for 18 years they had begun to take a toll on my body. (Read more about that journey here) Once removing antidepressants I seemed to be even more aware of side effects with medicines like cold and allergy medicines, or even non-drowsy Dramamine. Couple my reactions with my youngest sons food sensitivities and I had the perfect reason to start researching for alternatives.
Herbal and natural remedies are not always as fast acting as a medication. They usually take time to do their thing in our bodies. Some even have to almost build up in our bodies to begin to see a difference. So I can completely understand not having the patience to see results. However I’ve found them to be effective and have even seen them work well in conjunction with a medication. Herbal and Natural remedies tend to have less adverse side effects and can create long term benefits in the body over time.
Please don’t get me wrong there is definitely also a time and a place for pharmaceuticals and western medicine. Sometimes though there are other options that may be able to help.
