Sugar Part 3: Is Sugar Hiding In Your Food?

Is Sugar Masquerading by a Different Name in Your Food?

Now that many of us have seen the effects of long term increased sugar in our daily diets, we are doing our best to avoid added sugars. Manufactures recognize this change and have gotten creative by labeling sugar with different names. This is on top of the many forms of sugar that were already present in our foods but hadn’t recognized.

In this article I’m going to share with you 58 Common Names that Sugar goes by on our food labels, and some common foods that contain more sugar than you’d think.

When Reading Food Labels

When you grab a food item off the shelf in the store where do you think you should look to see how much sugar it contains? You can get a quick overview at how much sugar is in one serving on the Nutrition Facts portion of the label. Notice I did say amount per serving. Which often enough when we are eating processed foods we find ourselves eating more than the recommended serving, right?

Once you’ve checked out the nutrition facts move to the Ingredient List. This is where I spend 99.9% of my time reading when I’m purchasing a packaged food item. The ingredients are listed in descending order by weight, meaning that the ingredient that weighs the most is listed first, and the ingredient that weighs the least is listed last. So when sugar is listed towards the top of the ingredients it’s an indication there’s a good amount of sugar in that item.

Here’s a list of some more common names for sugar used on ingredient labels. Some are very easy to recognize as a form of sugar, while others are a little tricky.

When manufacturers are able to break apart the different types of sugar on the ingredient labels into all these different types it gives them the ability to have sugar listed lower on the ingredient list. In turn that makes the food item look better to the consumer.

I don’t know about you, but until I read a list similar to this one I would have never realized some of these were forms of sugar. After reading the list though you may find foods in your own refrigerator or pantry that you wouldn’t think contain sugar actually in fact do.
